LOCTITE 648 Retaining Compound

Loctite 648 – this is an extremely high strength shaft & bearing adhesive (Retaining Compound), designed for applications requiring heavy loads, vibration resistance, oil resistance and high temperatures.

1. Product information

Viscosity: Medium (~ 500 mPa·s)

Applications:

For fixing bearings, bushings, gears, pulleys, pins onto shafts or in housings.

Suitable for clearances up to 0.15 mm.

Ideal for high power, heavy load, shock & vibration applications.

Can be used on lightly oiled surfaces (no need for absolute cleaning).

Durability: Very high → disassembly usually requires high heat.

Working temperature: –55 °C to +175 °C.

Curing mechanism: Anaerobic (air is removed and metal is present).

2. Surface preparation

Clean dust, oil, grease, rust (Loctite SF 7063 is recommended).

For less active metals (stainless steel, aluminum, zinc) → Loctite Primer SF 7471 or SF 7649 should be used to speed up the curing process.

Ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying the adhesive.

3. How to use

Apply the adhesive:

Apply the adhesive to both the shaft and the hole.

For bearings/ball bearings → apply the adhesive to the hole, then press the shaft in immediately.

Assemble immediately after application, avoiding exposing the adhesive to air for too long.

Fix the part until the adhesive has initially cured.

4. Curing time

Initial fixation: ~ 5–10 minutes (steel), 15–20 minutes (low-activity materials).

Achieve working strength: 1–3 hours.

Achieve maximum strength: after 24 hours at room temperature.

5. Safety notes

Wear gloves and goggles when handling.

Avoid contact with eyes, skin, mouth.

Do not use near fire/high heat.

Store in a dry place, ideal temperature 8–21 °C.
